About the Album

This live recording shows that Eric McPherson isn’t just one of the most important figures in modern jazz drumming. He’s also a thoughtful and highly effective leader. On the debut of his double bass quartet, McPherson is joined by the great Cuban pianist David Virelles as well as two distinguished and very different bassists: John Hébert and Ben Street. The recording includes compositions by both Virelles and Hébert as well as a solo drum piece by McPherson and works by the likes of Andrew Hill, Thelonious Monk, and Jaki Byard. A deeply satisfying interpretation of Byard’s “Cinco y Cuatro” showcases the rich possibilities of the two bass combo as well as McPherson and Virelles’ masterful playing.
