About the Album

The stellar tenor saxophonist Noah Preminger is known for his burning, high-energy approach. For his newest recording, “Ballads,” he’s switching gears and exploring the great jazz tradition of making gorgeous melodies a vehicle for creative and mesmerizing playing. One of the album’s most unexpected gems is “Carry Me Ohio,” an enthralling tune by singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek, who performs as Sun Kil Moon. Preminger’s trance-like reinterpretation, distilled by his cohorts pianist Julian Shore, bassist Kim Cass and Allan Mednard, was inspired by playing the song repeatedly when his son was still in his mother’s womb.
