Ben Rosenblum again shows why he’s one of the most exciting and perennially surprising young voices in jazz with “The Longest Way Round,” his new genre-crossing album with the Nebula Project, which also includes trumpeter Wayne Tucker, saxophonist Jasper Dutz, guitarist Rafael Rosa, bassist Marty Jaffe, drummer Ben Zweig, and percussionists Gustavo Di Dalva and Brad Dutz. These stellar musicians show their mastery of everything from Irish folk music to Afro-Caribbean rhythm. While much of the disc fuses improvisation with global sounds, Rosenblum and his cohorts can also swing quite nicely in a hard bop context, as they prove resoundingly on the Mulgrew Miller-tribute “Albatross,” which includes some beautiful bass clarinet soloing from Dutz.
