Anticipata dalla traccia di apertura della splendida raccolta Grlz, questa antologia toglie dall'oblio una delle formazioni storiche del post-punk piò orientato a suoni danzabili e neri, quei Maximum Joy che sorsero nel crogiolo creativo della Bristol della fine degli anni Settanta.

Insieme alla cantante e violinista Janine Rainforth si erano riuniti componenti dei Glaxo Babies come il sassofonista Tony Wrafter e il batterista Charlie Llewellin, oltre al chitarrista John Waddington e il bassista Dan Catsis, tutte braci piccole, ma brucianti, di quella esplosione dell'indimenticato Pop Group da cui trassero origine anche i Pigbag e i Rip, Rig & Panic.

Rispetto a quello del "gruppo madre [snaturata]", il suono è certamente piò aperto a influssi e intrecci, quelli del funk e del dub, in modo particolare, quasi che lo spasmo ritmico abbia trovato un suo flusso nel rimbalzo fangoso del basso e della batteria.

Semi per tante musiche a venire sono gettati a piene mani, il disagio sociale dell'Inghilterra di quegli anni viene urlato con decisione, ma anche con una luce di rinnovata fiducia nei legami, nella comunità, nel risveglio, come incita a fare anche il loro singolo piò famoso, "Stretch", spinto dall'indimenticabile ruggito del sax.

L'antologia si muove tra il 1979 e il 1983 e tocca anche gli episodi piò jazzy, con la tromba ariosa a danzare tra percussioni e rumori quartomodisti, con la chitarra ad accendere evocazioni tribali come la splendida "Man of Tribes" e tante altre perle che oggi, a distanza di venticinque anni, riflettono una luce ancora tagliente e incantatrice, anche sotto un leggero velo di polvere. Da riscoprire, ascoltare, urlare e ballare!
