Ingrid Jensen: At Sea
But it takes more than a quick listen to hone in on the genuine spirit that the trumpeter and her sidemen convey on At Sea. Dreamy landscapes come intertwined with hot trumpet romps and mellow flugelhorn cascades that paint vivid pictures. Impressions abound. Jensen's horn lets the music swirl and eddy, capturing the motion of the ocean in its wake. Then, she lets the mist fly across the room, creating drastic fits of power that drive her modern jazz quartet to a mild frenzy. Rhythmically speaking, she's on top of her game.
Guitarist Lage Lund joins the band for Geoffrey Keezer's "Tea and Watercolors and Jensen's "Swotterings. Hugo Alcázar sits in for "Everything I Love, adding a wide array of lovely Latin percussion smatterings that bind the band's interpretation tight.
At times, Jensen takes on the kind of impressions that were left to us by Miles Davis before 1969. At other times, she celebrates with a seamless flow of melody, the kind that has motivated jazz trumpeters since before Louis Armstrong. In all instances, however, she speaks with an original trumpet voice that adheres to the concept of musical accuracy while invoking creative sparks to weave all the pieces together naturally.
