Daniele Gorgone NY Trio: Manhattan' Snow

Registrato a New York nell'ottobre del 2008, questo CD vede all'opera il giovane pianista livornese Daniele Gorgone (già vincitore nel 2006 del premio Barga Jazz con un suo quartetto), assieme all'eccellente contrabbassista Marco Panascia, siciliano di origine ma statunitense d'adozione, e al batterista afroamericano John Davis. In repertorio alcuni notissimi standard da Van Heusen, Monk e Mingus, un bel brano di Cedar Walton e due composizioni originali di Gorgone. Il tutto interpretato in stile mainstream, con molto swing, spazio per gli assolo, intensità ritmica.

Gorgone mette in luce grande scioltezza e agilità alla tastiera, lavorando sulle strutture armoniche più che sulle sugli stilemi espressivi; Panascia si sdoppia, offrendo una perfetta interpretazione del contrabbassista ritmico finché svolge il ruolo di accompagnatore, ma aprendosi degli spazi narrativi ogni volta che è impegnato in assolo, affrontati con grande profondità di suono; Davis appare un po' troppo relegato al ruolo di sideman, che comunque svolge con perizia e qualche non secondario dettaglio di originalità.

Ne scaturisce un lavoro fresco e spumeggiante, assai ben suonato e di gran trasporto swing, che ha forse nelle riletture di "Pannonica" e "Peggy's Blue Skylight" - così diverse da quanto si potrebbe aspettare e, proprio per questo, più sorprendenti - i momenti più alti.
