Westchester Jazz Orchestra: Maiden Voyage Suite

Fiore all'occhiello dell'odierno jazz orchestrale di New York, la Westchester Jazz Orchestra prova a rivisitare il classico album Maiden Voyage di Herbie Hancock. Questi arrangiamenti per big band tessono nuove trame intorno ad alcune composizioni divenute oggi fondamentali nel repertorio jazz. Aggiornate soluzioni orchestrali rileggono il modello con atmosfere swinganti ed efficaci, e con pregevoli assoli che lasciano il segno.

Riproporre capolavori come "Dolphin Dance" e "Maiden Voyage" poteva trasformarsi in un esercizio pericoloso, ricco di trappole. Ma a scongiurare il pericolo ci ha pensato l'arrangiatore Mike Holober con sontuose coloriture per i fiati e ariosi interludi che fanno da cornice alle composizioni di Hancock.

A far decollare un'orchestra di vaglia concorrono sfavillanti chase tra ance ed ottoni su un tappeto elastico quanto mobile. Solisti di razza impreziosiscono una condotta orchestrale da manuale, che oscilla tra richiami modali ed un hard-bop avanzato. Ne discende un'opera assai pregevole, dalle dinamiche in continuo movimento grazie ad un ensemble compatto e fantasioso.
