Kris Defoort Trio: Live in Bruges

Kris Defoort è uno di massimi jazzisti belgi e negli anni ha saputo coniugare la solida formazione classica con un rispettabile training jazzistico: dal 1987 al 1990 ha vissuto a New York studiando con Fred Hersch, David Berger, Paul Bley e collaborando con musicisti di varia estrazione stilistica, da Tito Puente a Jack de Johnette, da Vincent Herring a Barry Altschul, da Lee Konitz a Reggie Workman.

Negli anni Novanta è tornato in Belgio dove ha svolto varie attività musicali pur continuando a suonare con artisti del calibro di Jim Black e Mark Turner. Agli inizi del nuovo millennio, ha acquisito notorietà come autore dell'opera The Woman Who Walked into Doors, basata sul libro di Roddy Doyle e dopo varie altre esperienze e riconoscimenti, nel 2010 ha varato il suo trio comprendente il bassista elettrico Nicolas Thys e il batterista Lander Gyselinck.

Nel febbraio 2012 ha simultaneamente pubblicato ben tre album per l'etichetta del centro culturale De Werf (di Bruges): un lavoro in piano solo registrato dal vivo a Tokyo, uno in quartetto con Mark Turner, Nicolas Thys and Jim Black e appunto questo disco in trio.

Il percorso musicale inizia e si chiude con "Tokyo Dreams Ouverture," un brano concitato e iterativo influenzato dall'estetica del trio EST ma il brano successivo abbraccia altre prospettive, anche se il punto di gravità è la dimensione cameristica.

Si va da pezzi astratti (come "Lost Night 1" o "Diepblauwe Sehnsucht") ad altri caratterizzati dal contrasto tra liriche melodie e vivaci propulsioni ritmiche ("Lost Thoughts," "Le lendemain du lendemain"), da personali sintesi con linguaggio boppistico ("Bebop Dreams") fino a chiare incursioni nel free ("Laughin' Away").

Un po' troppo eterogeneo? Può darsi, ma ogni brano è pervaso da un'enigmatica e riflessiva profondità che dà identità all'opera, rendendola affascinante.
