Pete Robbins Transatlantic Quartet: Live in Basel
Pete Robbins, sassofonista e compositore di Brooklyn, non trova ancora alcun riscontro in Italia, a dispetto delle numerose tournèe europee effettuate. Leader di differenti formazioni, in grado di proporre sguardi antitetici al jazz odierno, Robbins con il Transatlantic Quartet sviscera una musica carica di ricchezza armonica, ritmicamente leggera e tonica, brillante per qualità solistica, bene espressa in questa registrazione dal vivo a Basilea. La sensazione è quella di una potenzialità molto larga, focalizzata però in soluzioni timbricamente adatte per l'organico.

"Eliotsong" sembra riferirsi con gusto alla lingua sonora di Canterbury: accordi stratificati, liquidi, melodie raffinate, un drumming in battere ma frastagliato e stimolante. Il sound vocalizzante di Robbins serve un fraseggio di una sicurezza tecnica ammaliante, ricordando un po' Dave Binney. "There There" prende spunto da un concetto di John Cage ma la musica non c'entra: è invece il primo saggio sulla "ballad," pienamente riuscito, replicato in seguito da "The Quiet Space Left Behind".

La nettezza di scrittura ed esecuzione si conferma anche nelle composizioni dai temi più angolari e dalla ritmica più mossa ("Inkhead," "Hoi Polloi"), in cui si affaccia l'ombra di Steve Coleman.

Ma l'originalità di Robbins sta tutta nella conduzione del gruppo, perfettamente equilibrata, con spazi generosi lasciati alle voci solistiche, sempre comunque al servizio del disegno d'insieme. Il danese Mikkel Ploug è chitarrista squisito, l'irlandese Simon Jermyn disegna le intelaiature ritmiche al basso elettrico intrecciando gusto intimista e sortite improvvise; il canadese Kevin Brow è batterista vivace, creativo, mentre il leader al sax alto racconta storie sempre fresche, avvincenti.

Un jazz fragrante, lontano da toni drammatici, ma di una fattura ammirevole.
