David Berkman Quartet: Live at Smoke

Sono i migliori momenti scelti da cinque set registrati nell'estate 2006, allo Smoke Club di New York, a comporre il materiale di questo Live at Smoke del David Berkman Quartet. Nelle note di copertina è lo stesso pianista a descrivere la sua passione per i jazz-club come lo Smoke: luoghi magici, dove la musica prende corpo e si dipana attraverso la passione del pubblico, dando vita a un'alchimia elettrizzante e sempre diversa.

Il disco, va detto, sembra partire con il freno a mano tirato: le iniziali "Weird Knack" e "The Mayor of Smoke" non coinvolgono a pieno, con i loro suoni "distanti," eccessivamente slegati. Mentre per il resto - parliamo di altri quattro brani a firma del leader - è un bel sentire, con Berkman e Jimmy Greene in evidenza: il primo grazie alla sua tecnica cristallina, fatta sia di tocchi dosati e funzionali che di slanci fantasiosi; il sassofonista perché capace di infilare più di un assolo maiuscolo, poderoso e ricercato.

La band evidenzia un ottimo affiatamento e l'atmosfera si fa densa, fino alle conclusive "Hidden Fondness," con i suoi dodici minuti sudati e colmi di vibrazioni trascinanti, e "Carroll Street Pop Tune," un pezzo in perfetto equilibrio tra eleganza e disinvoltura.

Certo è che mai nessuna registrazione potrà sostituirsi al "respiro" autentico di un jazz club, ma se una sera avete voglia di restarvene in casa, questo Live at Smoke potrà sicuramente regalarvi delle belle emozioni.
