Maryanne de Prophetis Trio: Lilacs in Winter

Glance, l'album d'esordio, ce l'aveva segnalata come una delle voci più interessanti e originali nel panorama della musica improvvisata. Perché possiede una espressività davvero unica e perché i suoi testi hanno la profondità, la sintesi e l'eleganza che solo le poesie trasmettono (de Prophetis è anche apprezzata poetessa).

Il trio è lo stesso, un grande Frank Kimbrough al pianoforte e un intenso Ron Horton al flicorno, e la musica mantiene il suo impianto decisamente cameristico, con un marcato understatement sonoro ed una sorta di sospensione, accentuata dall'assenza di uno strumento tipicamente ritmico.

Ma in Lilacs in Winter aumenta decisamente lo spazio riservato alla libera improvvisazione, lo sperimentalismo linguistico e vocale di de Prophetis si fa più audace, Horton e Kimbrough delineano contorni molto più sfumati, spesso aperti e aleatori. Il trombettista sfrutta i registri acuti dello strumento introducendo elementi dissonanti nel suo lirismo innato, il pianista spezza il fraseggio, lavora sulle singole note, tessendo una ragnatela asimmetrica.

In tale contesto brillano maggiormente i brani più strutturati, dall'impronta melodica ben marcata e dall'andamento consequenziale. Come il traditional "Wayfaring Stranger," un antico spiritual dalle origini sconosciute preso a ritmo lentissimo, e come "Hymn for Peace," brano dall'incedere solenne e dal sapore agrodolce di una ballata irlandese.
