Judi Silvano: Lessons Learned

"Preferisco lavorare come parte di un ensemble piuttosto che pormi di fronte al gruppo —diceva Judy Silvano nel 2002 a Down Beat—Da quando ho iniziato a esibirmi nei primi anni ottanta ho avuto difficoltà a percepire i cantanti come una razza diversa dagli strumentisti." Una peculiarità che ritroviamo in Lessons Learned con Judi parte integrante di una band senza pianoforte, con due chitarristi (Kenny Wessel e Bruce Arnold), un sassofonista/clarinetto basso (Adam Kolker) e ritmica. In un paio di occasioni interviene Joe Lovano, marito della cantante.

Tutti i brani, sia nelle musiche che nei testi, sono scritti da Judi e il percorso alterna qualche ballad, una bossa nova, un calypso ed episodi dinamici o frenetici che inglobano anche momenti rock.
Dotata di stile esuberante, chiarezza d'esposizione e buona immaginazione musicale, Judi dà il meglio quando vocalizza in brani ritmici mentre risulta poco coinvolgente dal punto di vista emotivo, per la carenza di sfumature e il timbro non particolarmente personale. In definitiva i brani che fanno risaltare al massimo le sue doti sono pochi e tra questi in particolare "Dust," un frizzante calypso reinventato dal fantasioso sax tenore di Lovano.
