Sei trombe, sei sax, quattro tromboni più la ritmica. È la formula di un ensemble di all stars, guidato dal magnifico compositore ed arrangiatore Gerald Wilson. Oggi novantatreeene, Wilson rimane il classico "musician's musician," amato da diverse generazioni di colleghi e addetti ai lavori ma poco noto al grande pubblico. Un autentico fuoriclasse che ha già lasciato il segno fin dagli arrangiamenti per Jimmy Lunceford alla fine degli anni '30.

Il titolo del CD allude alle tre generazioni della famiglia Wilson coinvolta nel progetto, per riunire nonno, figlio e nipote. In primo piano una fascinosa suite dedicata alla città di Chicago, anticipata da alcune libere variazioni su temi di Stravinsky, Debussy e Puccini. Che questo disco abbia qualcosa di veramente speciale, lo si capisce già dalle prime note. Tutto è contrassegnato dall'inventiva fluente, al servizio di una coralità appassionata ed incalzante da parte di tutti i membri dell'orchestra.

Wilson è una enciclopedia vivente, che ricrea sulla base dei modelli omaggiati. Provate ad ascoltare la sua felicissima rivisitazione di Debussy: una scatola magica dove le armonie impressioniste si trasformano magicamente in blues. L'elemento dialogico che nel jazz è fondamentale, si carica qui di nuovi sensi e significati grazie ai quali tutti - leader e musicisti - danno vita ad una connotazione nuova al dato preesistente.

Un progetto da sostenere ed amare, che documenta l'inestinguibile vena creativa di una leggenda vivente del jazz.
