Bobby Previte & Bump: Just Add Water

To march by the beat of a slightly different drummer is exactly what talented musician Bobby Previte has been doing for quite awhile. The drummer and composer is a New York "home boy" who has been on the music scene for many years and is still going strong. With release Just Add Water, he continues his quest to provide the populace with eclectic and entertaining compositions. With a flair for avant-garde, classical, and experimental music, Mr. Previte’s music has not become stagnate and he has formed separate jazz groups to express his multifarious tendencies. Just Add Water continues the works of the much-acclaimed release Bump, The Renaissance, which was released in the late 80’s. The group consists of original members, bassist extraordinare Steve Swallow; Marty Ehrlich on saxophone; trombonist Ray Anderson, Wayne Horwitz on piano, and special guest, Joseph Bowie also on trombone.

In the capable hands of Previte’s Bump ensemble the music is transformed into an adventurous experience. The musicians are all talented and like minded visionaries. With not one, but two trombones, Anderson and Bowie open up the music even further with a blues and funky New Orleans flavor on selections such as "53 Maserfati"’ and "63". The fun and jazzy romp entitled "Stingray" is a tight groove which highlights Previte’s talent and arranging skills. His drum solos are explosive, tight, and weave around intricate horn arrangements. His delicate cymbal work is a pleasure to hear. Marty Ehrlich lays down some serious sax work with throaty swirls and honks on the infectious groove "Leave Here Now ". Highlights include the powerful march anthem "All Hail Kirby!" and the poignant selection "Nice Try" which showcases beautiful sax and piano work by Ehrlich and Horvitz. Swallow displays his usual mastery on bass, with excellent bass solos and the usual solid bottom work. Just Add Water is a listening treat for anyone willing to step a little outside the norm and have some serious fun.
