Jimmy Lyons & Sunny Murray Trio: Jump Up

Jump Up è un magnifico esempio di energia e di forza espressiva. Registrato il 30 agosto del 1980 al festival di Willisau, originariamente venne pubblicato su vinile nel 1981.

Siamo lontani dalla stagione in cui la coppia Lyons - Murray suonava in trio con Cecil Taylor (e, assieme a Taylor, suonò anche con Albert Ayler, a Copenaghen nel novembre del '62). Ci troviamo, invece, alla vigilia di un decennio politicamente e sociologicamente orientato al riflusso e decisamente critico nella storia del jazz, ma come dimostrano bene queste tracce la creatività non conosce genere né tempo e allora forse val la pena di soffermarsi più sulle formidabili idee improvvisative che affondano le radici in temi nati da brevi monadi melodiche reiterate, oppure sulle straordinarie capacità strumentali dei tre.

Infatti questo disco ci regala momenti del tutto ammirevoli anche sul piano della tecnica pura. Lyons riesce a estrarre dal suo sassofono suoni che possono ricordare Ayler nella capacità di condurre al massimo la tensione sonora, ma anche Charlie Parker nell'inventiva e nel fraseggio; Lindberg si muove tra pizzicato e archetto con quel suono carnoso che lo contraddistingue e una velocità che si agita tra linee ora sconnesse ora perfettamente intelligibili; infine Murray conduce un lavorio con i piatti che è al tempo stesso incistato nella conversazione a tre e devastante.

Ognuno a proprio modo contribuisce a drammatizzare fino all'apice l'improvvisazione, come si ascolta in "Riffs # 5," in cui un crescendo vertiginoso di sassofono dopo sei minuti di progressiva impennata sfocia nel silenzio, ma anche nei primi due brani, quando il sax al termine del suo assolo lascia il testimone al contrabbasso su un terreno percussivo che è un bordone di piatti, un flusso continuo metallico apparentemente inossidabile.
