Joyce Cobb: Joyce Cobb with the Michael Jefry Stevens Trio

Anche John Hammond non l'aveva capito. Prima che se ne occupasse Jerry Wexler, voleva fare di Aretha Franklin una nuova Ella Fitzgerald ma non ottenne grossi risultati.

Intendiamo dire che una cantante soul (anche strepitosa come Aretha) non è necessariamente una brava jazz singer e, fatte le debite proporzioni, la cosa vale anche per Joyce Cobb.

Operante a Memphis, come il trio del pianista Michael Jefry Stevens che l'accompagna, la Cobb è stata sotto contratto per la mitica Stax Records ed ha girato in tour con i Temptations e Muddy Waters. È un'efficace soul singer, dotata di temperamento e di profonda voce contralto ma non esce dalla routine quando interpreta ballad come "Skylark," "Daydream," "I'm in the Mood for Love" per non parlare di brani monkiani come "Man, That Was a Dream" o "Well You Needn't" che farebbero tremare chiunque.

Le modalità interpretative sono rigide e non ha quella sensibilità jazzistica che rende credibile l'interpretazione di un song, magari con un filo di voce come faceva Helen Merrill. Molto più efficace è l'iniziale interpretazione di "Moanin,'" classico della stagione soul-jazz. Peccato che Joyce non sia rimasta su quel repertorio.

Concludiamo con due parole su Michael Jefry Stevens, un pianista di gran classe, che è ovviamente a suo agio in ogni occasione.
