Hot Club of Detroit: It's About That Time

Se fosse vissuto oggi, come sarebbe stata la musica di Django Reinhardt? Domande abbastanza accademica, ma forse non troppo. Perché a chiederselo più di una volta è stato Evan Perri, chitarrista e leader degli Hot Club of Detroit. E a proposito di citazioni dotte, proprio il nome della sua band lo deve, evidentemente, all'altro Hot Club: proprio quello che sfidò le leggi di gravità armonica e melodica negli anni trenta, di stanza però a Parigi e guidato dal chitarrista di origine belghe e dal violinista Stéphan Grappelli.

Dentro e fuori le citazioni, il quintetto statunitense si diverte ad attualizzare la musica di Reinhardt (proprio quest'anno ricorre il centenario della sua nascita), ma non si ferma solo alle invenzioni del chitarrista. Ravviva il repertorio di Pat Martino (l'iniziale "On the Steps" è una parafrasi armonica di "On the Stairs" con una capatina dalle parti della "Giant Steps" di John Coltrane).

Poi c'è l'omaggio a un altro chitarrista, Stephane Wrembel ("For Stéphane"), e una parata di cover di artisti i più disparati. I 5/4 swinganti della "Nostalgia in Times Square" di Charles Mingus, la lunare "Tristesse" di Chopin, la briosa title track (originariamente scritta a quattro mani da Miles Davis e Reinhardt), alcuni lampi di originale creatività ("Restless Twilights" è un godibile esempio di bossa").

Il resto è una felice reinterpretazione delle lezioni ritmico - melodiche del geniale Reinhardt ("Noto Swing," "Duke and Dukie"). L'assenza della batteria non si avverte proprio, tanto è la percussività di tutta la tracklist scelta.

Il terzo lavoro degli Hot Club of Detroit è un gioiello di tecnica, cuore e passione. Che si ascoltano integre e senza mediazioni in questo ritorno al futuro tutto "a la pompe".
