Il chitarrista finlandese Kalle Kalima è una delle realtà più interessanti del panorama europeo della chitarra jazz più moderna e creativa. Da alcuni anni si è trasferito a Berlino e coi suoi gruppi 'Klima Kalima' [di cui abbiamo recensito Helsinki on My Mind e 'Johnny LaMarama' sta dando ottime prove discografiche e concertistiche. Una produzione radiofonica di fine 2005 è servita come spunto per questo album in solo che poi è stato realizzato fra luglio 2007 e luglio 2008, dopo accurata preparazione.

La musica è stata registrata live con alcuni interventi successivi per accorciare alcune tracce. Il segnale della chitarra elettrica di Kalle Kalime è servito per pilotare 5 diversi amplificatori [da cui il nome del progetto, Pentasonic], passando anche attraverso effetti e sampler. Le situazioni sonore che ne derivano sono molto interessanti, delicate e capaci di evocare paesaggi sonori incantati che si caratterizzano per efficaci brandelli melodici di grande interesse, con il supporto ritmico ottenuto dai loop innescati in tempo reale dalla chitarra che attiva i due campionatori impiegati simultaneamente.

Siamo più dalle parti di Bill Frisell che non da quelle di Derek Bailey, ma bisogna dare atto a Kalle Kalima di essere riuscito a produrre un album molto interessante e allo stesso tempo molto originale, con grande competenza tecnica e una ottima visione di quello che poteva essere il risultato finale. I piccoli effetti ritmici generati coi loop diventano come per magia perfetti inneschi per situazioni trance che sono in qualche modo evocate sin dal titolo dell'album e della traccia iniziale.

Il percorso è intrigante e assertivo, capace di coinvolgere emotivamente l'ascoltatore sin nel profondo dell'anima. Il clima è meditativo e brumoso, con aree più filigranate che si alternano a momenti più incalzanti. C'è una sorta di beat sempre presente, anche quando è semplicemente implicito. E' il beat dell'anima di Kalle Kalima e siamo tutti invitati ad allinearci.
