Intersection is the second album from saxophonist Lenny Sendersky and guitarist Tony Romano, following Desert Flower (LeTo Records, 2013)—an all original set with compositions contributed equally by both co-leaders. They are joined by veteran bassist Steve LaSpina (who has considerable history with guitarists, including Jim Hall, Pat Martino, and Vic Juris) and drummer Matt Kane. Romano plays nylon-string guitar—but without emphasizing the latin or classical styles usually associated with the instrument—giving the band a distinctive, contemporary sound.

Sandersky's "Yello" opens the set with a striking bolero feel, a snaking melody over a bass ostinato with guitar interjections. Romano's "Words and Deeds" follows with an upbeat 6/8 rhythm—so the program promises an eclectic approach from the start. Sendersky's "Walking in St. Petersburg" is a lovely ballad, featuring a solo introduction from Romano and a melodic bass solo. "Time" has a memorable Middle Eastern-flavored theme—which recurs throughout the piece—an interesting departure from the usual head/solo/head arrangement—and a driving bass ostinato. The title tune is a bossa from Romano's pen, as is "Distance," the second ballad of the set. He is also responsible for the closer "Lift Off," a contemporary tune with an ECM sound (and a touch of flamenco flavor), recalling someone like Ralph Towner.

Sendersky and Romano really have something here, a combination that plays to their strengths as players and composers. It's a varied program of memorable tunes, played with verve. A treat for any contemporary jazz lover, and especially recommended to fans of jazz played on the nylon-string guitar.
