Ellery Eskelin - Gerry Hemingway: Inbetween Spaces
Da un'ipotesi iniziale fatta di sostanziali contrasti e quindi di suono contrapposto alla percussione o di melodia sovrapposta alla pulsione, nasce invece una musica di straordinario respiro che rimanda di continuo all'Africa e a una circolarità insistente ma anche al jazz notturno e metropolitano ("Motion and Thought") a un anelito interiore appena percettibile ("Stillness and Flow"), alla meditazione di un intreccio percussivo polimetrico ("Sustain and Footwork") e sboccia solo raramente in una libertà assolutamente destrutturata (nel finale di "Shaken and Spill").
Tra i punti di forza ci sono anche le risorse timbriche dei due, che sembrano davvero immense: se Eskelin passa su tutta la gamma sonora del suo strumento con padronanza, Hemingway sembra un autentico maestro del rumore estraendo soffi, stridori e clangori di tutte le intensità in un continuo rimando di spunti forniti al collega e di adesione al registro adottato.
Quindi questo è un disco che raggiunge vertici di rara bellezza e che, pur essendo completamente improvvisato, difficilmente si rispecchia negli archetipi del free. Nell'ormai inflazionata produzione di dischi di musica improvvisata questo è un lavoro assolutamente da conservare.
