Miguel Zenon: Identities Are Changeable

Il progetto di Miguel Zenon Identities Are Changeable è ambizioso nel voler coniugare in un unicum espressivo musica ed interviste ad immigrati portoricani a New York. L'obiettivo era quello di aggiungere un nuovo tassello alla più che decennale esplorazione dei legami tra jazz e la musica del suo paese d'origine. Ma l'originalità dell'idea non ha un suo riscontro nella realizzazione, dove il parlato risulta un po'troppo invasivo rispetto al flusso musicale. Sia pur lodevole, l'indagine sociologica messa in campo tende a deviare l'attenzione dell'ascoltatore verso la sfera non musicale. E a conti fatti, i due percorsi non si amalgano bene, a differenza di quanto ci si poteva aspettare.

Anche sul piano strettamente musicale, l'opera non sembra essere particolarmente memorabile. La suite per quartetto ed orchestra altro non fa che trasporre sul piano orchestrale alcuni dei più noti clichè del latin jazz. In primo piano i vari procedimenti poliritmici della tradizione caraibica, come tappeto sonoro di una swingante tessitura mainstream alternata a quella latineggiante. Ma da un musicista di vaglia come Zenon era forse lecito attendersi qualcosa di più pregnante ed originale.
