William Parker: I Play to Stay a Believer - The Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield
Come dice lo stesso Parker nelle note di copertina, ogni canzone ne ha un'altra nascosta all'interno, una canzone che vive nell'ombra, e in questo caso la formazione sembra avere sviscerato a fondo il senso più interiore dell'opera di Mayfield, grazie a interpretazioni in cui i temi iniziali si proiettano lungo traiettore sorrette di volte in volta da sezioni fiati poderose o da dinamiche dai contrasti squassanti, ma anche da taglienti lacerazioni free, da funk irresistibile o da straordinari momenti alla radici del canto corale nero che brillano sottotraccia quando, nei brani registrati a New York e a Parigi, il gruppo è stato affiancato da cori giovanili non professionisti.
Tutto sommato questo disco è anche un eccellente dimostrazione di democrazia musicale quando i temi vengono circuiti e ricamati dai testi di Baraka, ispirati alla rivendicazione sociale e giustizia e quando le architetture musicale si sviluppano lungo percorsi nati dagli spunti suggeriti di volta in volta da singoli musicisti che come in un parlamento nero innalzano le loro voci sospinti da un'urgenza espressiva vitale.
Tre i brani registrati in Italia nell'ottobre 2008: "We the People Who Are Darker than Blue" e "It's All Right," immortalati al festival di Cormòns (dove l'ottetto fu protagonista di un bellissimo concerto) e "Move On Up" eseguita a Botticino Jazz.
