Brad Goode: Hypnotic Suggestion

This well-programmed set of originals and standards showcases Brad Goode's first-rate trumpet playing. On the opening title track, Goode enters mysteriously in his solo, before darting around and interacting deftly with the rhythm section, particularly drummer Dana Hall.

The rhythm section, comprised of Hall, pianist Adrean Farrugia (whose advanced harmonic conception and lyricism recalls Herbie Hancock) and bassist Kelly Sill, shifts gears seamlessly on Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing. The rhythmic juxtaposition is excellent, especially during Farrugia's spot. Goode's fresh interpretation of the head is a delight; the opening theme statement and the restatement of the theme at the close of the piece differ significantly.

Another instance of Goode transforming a familiar tune is "Crazy Rhythm. Here he utilizes, as Harvey Pekar mentions in the liner notes, the "top half of a juice jug for a mute, which creates an interesting sound. He shows off some expert chops on this one, utilizing some double-tonguing and half-valving on the cute opening theme. Creative ideas seem to pour out of Goode's horn here and, again, he relishes his musical conversation with Hall.

Goode is at his fleetest on "Thinking of You, where his unexpected accents and sophisticated rhythmic approach yield a madly swinging solo. Indeed, everyone delivers excellent bop-infused solos on this piece. Other highlights include Goode's frenzied flurry of notes, growling phrases and glissandos on "Just A Thought, and a relatively free-form version of "Beautiful Love.

Brad Goode's ability to incorporate many different, often daring, elements in his playing sets him above many others who choose to play it safe. Recommended.
