Mike Clement: Hittin' It
Mike Clement makes no bones about his love for the classic organ trio configuration. The Canadian-born, New Orleans-based guitarist uses his liner statement to praise the format and namecheck a handful of his legendary six-string forebears who've made their mark in said domain (i.e. Pat Martino, George Benson, Grant Green), and the music he presents on Hittin' It offers all of the good charms associated with this type of combo.

Joining forces with organist John Lee and NOLA drumming icon Herlin Riley, Clement delivers nine originals that are easy to enjoy. "Actualization" opens the door and swings right down the middle. "That's It," supported by Lee's walking lines and Riley's classy brush backing, has a simple appeal and relaxed comportment. "Temperance" sets a straight-time course where Lee and Riley hold things in place while Clement leans into and elaborates on his designs. And "Mr Not So PC" is a burner, offering Clement a chance to cook with clarity before ceding the spotlight to each of his bandmates. Riley, not surprisingly, offers explosive evidence supporting his stature.

The shuffling "So Bro," possessing a catchy, bluesy head, is well-placed at the album's midpoint, and the second half of the program proves to be just as enjoyable as the first. The title track, with its bright drive, Latin spicing, strong solo work and soulful bearing, hits a number of sweet spots. "I Got Somethin'" satisfies with bebop bona fides. "Cruisin' High," coasting along over Riley's "Poinciana"-esque groove before shifting to swing time behind Lee, is at once rooted and air-bound. And closer "Pick Peck" returns to the bop well with positive results. Precision, concision, good taste and spontaneity are core components of Mike Clement's work, and all play an equal part in the success of Hittin' It.
