Matt Wilson Quartet + John Medeski: Gathering Call
Il materiale originale presente in Gathering Call, tutto a firma Matt Wilson, si informa ad una musica che si ascolta con il piacere dei sapori di una volta ma non disdegna la sfida con l'ascoltatore, miscelando groove accattivanti con garbate escursioni polifoniche, delicate visioni con vigorosi unisoni boppistici.
Tra i brani da segnalare, oltre alla coppia di splendide versioni ellingtoniane, l'originale "Some Assembly Required," frizzante con retrogusto amarognolo come una coppa di champagne, la fulminea, ornettiana "How Ya Going?," e "If I Were A Boy" una hit di Beyoncè illuminata dai fiati del quartetto.
La qualità e lo spirito avventuroso dei musicisti sono il valore aggiunto dell'incisione che integra nel rodato quartetto—sono attivi da quasi un decennio—il tastierista John Medeski. Qui impegnato al pianoforte acustico, lontano dalle esuberanze elettriche del MMW Trio, contribuisce con uno stile essenziale e incisivo alla buona riuscita della registrazione.
