Graham Haynes: Full Circle
Graham Haynes ha ormai maturato un’esperienza ricca, diversificata nei suoi capitoli.

Se come strumentista ha saputo costantemente farsi valere sia in contesti d’avanguardia che in quelli più convenzionali, come leader-compositore ha intrapreso strade sperimentali tuttora in divenire, come dimostra questo recente Full Circle, opera in otto atti densa di riferimenti, proiettata idealmente in un futuro ancora dai contorni indeterminati, ibrido linguisticamente.

Haynes, pur essendo figlio di un’icona del jazz (il batterista Roy), non si definisce quale musicista jazz, ma come esploratore sonoro trasversale, visitatore onnivoro dell’elettricità pulsante che scandisce il suono metropolitano odierno.

Lo sguardo più naturale, allora, è rivolto verso il Miles Davis dell’ultimo periodo, specie per la peculiarità di soppesare il suono puro rispetto all’articolazione delle frasi.

Haynes aggiunge di suo una mistura speziata di drum&bass, un uso della voce femminile più sognante che ritmico (“Circle One”), uno studio sull’iterazione di timbri e cicli sonori a volte un po’ gratuito, comunque una libertà progettuale che va rispettata anche se non coincide sempre con risultati efficaci.

Si nota una certa pesantezza nel background ritmico ed un impiego delle tastiere spesso effettistico ma non intenso (“Standing Before Time”).

Ciò non toglie che a tratti le atmosfere del disco siano affascinanti e che il lavoro collettivo si percepisca come un reale “work in progress”.

Il suono elettrico-eclettico di Graham Haynes piacerà ai fautori delle nuove fusioni stilistiche, in parte figlie della musica degli anni '70, ma ardenti di indipendenza e combattività.

Irrisolto ma stimolante.
