Shakai: Fragments
Shakai is a Japanese word for society, and Fragments, is an album that lives up to its name, presenting listeners with a collection of musical pieces that, while individually intriguing, struggle to coalesce into a truly satisfying whole. It is a blend of jazz-rock that is both soothing and intricate. The Norwegian quintet, led by bassist Eline Rafteseth, brings together a diverse set of influences, creating a sound that is both eclectic and accessible. The album features Elisabeth Lid Tronen's smooth and exuberant saxophone solos and Gabriela Garrubo's captivating vocals, all contributing to its overall charm. However, like a jigsaw puzzle missing a few key pieces, the album leaves you with an incomplete picture.

The ensemble's pacing remains steady, with few surprises or dynamic shifts to keep listeners fully engaged. Tracks like "Kanskje" and "Not Yours" stand out with their memorable melodies and emotional depth amid pleasant background EFX treatments and a punchy backbeat on the latter. Still, the overall uniformity in tempo and style can make the album feel repetitive. Despite this, the musicianship is top-notch, and the production quality is excellent, displaying the band's technical skills and cohesive sound. "Dandelion Child" offers pleasant guitar voicings by Simen Walle and Tronen's ascending lines are executed with finesse and soaring dynamics. "Lullaby" is developed with extra reverb and emits an otherworldly soundscape. The final track "Changes" is perhaps the album's highlight. The band steps up the pace with a powerful motif led by drummer Kenneth Kapstad's hard-hitting and swiftly executed beats and the soloist's semi-circular choruses. In sum, Shakai offers an amiable listening experience with its smooth jazz-rock fusion. However, the lack of tempo variation and dynamic shifts may leave some listeners wanting more excitement and variety. It is a good album for a relaxed evening, but it might not hold the attention of those seeking a more diverse and engaging musical journey.
