The Dominant 7 and The Jazz Arts Messengers: Fourteen Channels

Per celebrare in maniera concreta i primi dieci anni della propria attività, il Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts di Denver ha selezionato un gruppo di giovani studenti coinvolgendoli nel progetto Fourteen Channels, un'iniziativa che ha dato modo a questi musicisti in erba di misurarsi con la realizzazione di un album vero è proprio.

Sotto la guida del direttore artistico Paul Romaine sono stati scritti 14 brani originali, sette per ogni gruppo che ha preso parte al progetto: The Dominant 7 e The Jazz Arts Messengers, due band composte da ritmica, chitarra e sezione fiati. Ogni traccia è stata ideata prendendo spunto da 14 differenti immagini creative, come la pittura di Robert Rauschenberg, i profumi della primavera, i paesaggi impressionanti del Grand Canyon, o gli stati d'animo dell'essere umano.

Ne è scaturito un album vivo, esuberante, pieno di motivi d'interesse. A cominciare dal sound corale e di grande impatto espresso dai The Jazz Arts Messengers, ai quali va dato merito per "The Cycle," un brano che contiene due soli di ottima fattura, dell'atoista David Reid e di Sam Yulsman al piano. Un gradino sotto le composizioni dei The Dominant 7, leggermente rivolte a soluzioni più prevedibili, anche se ugualmente avvolgenti nel loro incedere. Nel complesso Fourteen Channels è un album gradevole, non di grandissima originalità, va detto, ma suonato con amore e passione per il jazz.
