Michael Vlatkovich 5 Winds: Five of Us

Ensemble (nello specifico quintetto) di soli fiati (non solo ance ma anche ottoni), come una volta era praticamente inaudito, dopo di che ci si sono misurati in diversi, e in tempi recenti quasi più nessuno: questa è la formazione a cui si rivolge il vulcanico trombonista losangelino Michael Vlatkovich per questo suo nuovo lavoro, peraltro inciso (a Toronto) nell'abbastanza lontano 2015. Vi trova posto una musica curata, parecchio scritta ma non per questo priva di singoli apporti in grado di insaporirla, né di momenti più liberi anche nei momenti collettivi.

Il cuore dell'album è occupato da una suite in nove movimenti che riprende il nome del gruppo (un banalissimo 5 Winds), sempre molto calibrata, tornita (a volte anche con qualche lieve rigidità), cui seguono sei brani singoli, negli ultimi tre casi dai titoli chilometrici, con punte di eccellenza, diremmo, per gli episodi che vanno dall'undicesimo al tredicesimo e per il quindicesimo e ultimo, il più ampio del lotto, diretto e corporeo ma con una sua felice articolazione.

Disco non banale che riattualizza una formula, come detto, ultimamente un po' trascurata.
