Glenn Ferris - Bruno Rousselet - Ernie Odoom: Ferris Wheel

Da un personaggio che ha incrociato il suo trombone con la geniale follia di Frank Zappa, con le melodie ruffiane dei Duran Duran, con la rigorosità euclidea di Steve Lacy, ci si può aspettare di tutto. Che scriva, per esempio, una manciata di canzoni old style, che ad interpretarle chiami un sassofonista con la passione per il canto, Ernie Odoom, che scelga come terzo interlocutore un bassista swingante e versatile, Bruno Rousselet.

Dietro questo Ferris Wheel, che ha tutta l'aria di un divertissement, di un piccolo sogno nel cassetto finalmente realizzato, vi è l'enciclopedico trombone di Ferris, mai come in questa incisione così vicino alle corde e alla cantabilità della voce umana. Non mancano certo i prodigi tecnici che hanno contribuito ad alimentare la fama del trombonista californiano, ma l'atmosfera generale è improntata ad un clima di intima e gioiosa colloquialità, di soffuso understatement.

Si va così dall'andamento gospelish di "Sabbath Prayer," all'ondivagare dinoccolato di "To You," con in bella evidenza la voce anomala di Odoom, dall'accennata sperimentazione di "Metrognome" al mantra di "Like That" per finire naturalmente con l'immancabile blues di "You Are So Beautiful" e "Forever Blues".
