Il lato gentile del neo-bop. Talvolta talmente gentile da sfociare in smooth jazz (di classe s’intende). Potremmo inquadrare in questo modo Family First, il nuovo lavoro di Mark Sherman, vibrafonista newyorchese saldamente ancorato allo straight-ahead jazz ma pure richiesto solista di grandi orchestre di musica classica.

Che si tratti di brani a tempo veloce o medio lento, originals o composizioni altrui, Sherman riserva loro lo stesso trattamento. Arrangiamenti morbidi che riescono ad addolcire persino composizioni tutt’altro che lineari come quelle di Joe Henderson, interventi solistici eleganti e misurati, assoluta padronanza del canone jazzistico, sonorità levigate.

Il vibrafono di Sherman galleggia senza gravità sulle linee melodiche dei brani, spesso in simbiosi con la tromba di Joe Magnarelli, musicista tecnicamente ineccepibile e dalla voce di cristallina purezza. Il piano di Allen Farnham, abituato ad accompagnare vocalist di rango come Susannah McCorkle, Mel Tormè, Mark Murphy, conosce l’arte della discrezione, la sezione ritmica è di metronomica precisione e si concede qualche coloritura latin jazz.

Per chi ama un jazz rilassante e conciliante.
