Daniel Carter, settantenne polistrumentista originario della Pennsylvania, e Federico Ughi, quarantatreenne batterista romano, da quindici anni di stanza a New York, confezionano un doppio CD in due volumi separati raccogliendovi un totale di diciannove brani liberamente improvvisati nel corso di un'unica seduta d'incisione alla fine del 2012.

La sovrabbondanza del materiale avrebbe forse consigliato la sintesi del tutto in un unico volume. Poi, però, l'ascolto rivela che molte delle cose migliori trovano posto nel secondo CD, formalmente di bonus tracks, per cui è del tutto probabile che esistesse da subito l'intenzione di scorporare e documentare il tutto in questo modo.

Precisato che nel primo volume Carter non si misura col clarinetto e nel secondo con tromba e sax alto, eccoci a parlare un po' più dettagliatamente della musica, che tende a sdipanarsi abbastanza piana, ben strutturata, a volte anche un po' dimessa, fin troppo uniforme, benché alcuni episodi più ampi in cui lo stesso Carter alterna diversi strumenti seguano tracciati più irregolari, articolati, increspati, risultando a conti fatti i migliori del lotto (e citiamo almeno "Extra Room" nel primo volume, "Over Easy" e "Working a Double" nel secondo).

Per una più puntuale specificità timbrica (ma può essere una preferenza personale), risultano particolarmente apprezzabili gli exploit di Carter su flauto e clarinetto (limitatamente al secondo volume, come detto), mentre anche le sezioni pianistiche, interrompendo il lungo rosario dei fiati, costituiscono un'opportuna variante all'interno del tutto.

Sempre funzionale, anche se piuttosto minoritario rispetto al partner, il ruolo di Ughi, che s'inserisce ovunque con misura, per quanto un'impostazione più spinta sul versante squisitamente cromatico, timbrico, del suo drumming avrebbe dato certo maggior appeal a un dialogo a due che invece, così, cade qua e là in un minimo di ripetitività, entro un lavoro, peraltro, complessivamente più che apprezzabile.
