Nancy Walker: Deeper Down
With eight original compositions, Walker's careful crafting shines forth. "Wise Owl" showcases Davidson's easy manner. Percussion and bass pull their weight, too, propelling the song along. Though most of the tracks are over six minutes in that traditional jazzy vein, they do not come off as endless. There is an unfurling that suits the quartet. Some have a longer piano intro, as with "Paradigm Shift," whereas others get the main tempo underway. Walker is not a powerhouse pianist; she is more attuned to the softer passages and phrasing that are like midnight whispers. The elegance of her technique serves her well, even displays a modern Bill Evans tone.
Her earlier effort, 'Til Now Is Secret (Addo, 2014), carries a similar laid back attitude. Although the style is less fluid or flowing, there remains an awareness of the music and where it is headed. Comparing these older pieces to her newer ones, one notices a stronger 'self' emerge in the latter. Deeper Down is not an album that screams "look at me." It holds itself to a higher standard and allows the instruments the leisure and space to take their time with a tune.
"Edges Rounded" starts immediately, the beat already decided. Slightly urgent with a driving percussion, the sax still seems mellow, unrushed. Piano and bass support from the background. Again, it grabs attention without trying to be overly stylistic or involve wheeling and twirling solos. Unlike Renee Rosnes, Fred Hersch or even Diana Krall, Walker's playing is more supportive than tricked out. That, of course, does not mean she is bland, but rather that she is a team player who can light up the keys when necessary. With an ear for subtle shifts, the quartet performs with dignity, confidence and a style that draws the listener in.
