Joe "Sonny" Barbato: Crackerjack

Il fisarmonicista americano Joe “Sonny” Barbato, sideman per artisti come Kenny Barron, Bobby Previte, Joe Locke e Jerry Bergonzi, si presenta qui con il primo lavoro da leader, nel quale raccoglie brani registrati con formazioni diverse: quintetto con piano, quintetto con chitarra, sestetto con tromba e sax soprano, duo con chitarra. Le composizioni - a parte la conclusiva “Alfie” di David e Bacharach - sono tutte o di Barbato, o del pianista David Budway, con il chitarrista Jimmy Ponder uno dei musicisti con i quali Barbato è solito suonare più frequentemente.

L’album è complessivamente piuttosto convenzionale e Barbato vi si propone alla fisarmonica in modo altrettanto tradizionale. Vi svolgono un ruolo significativo le percussioni di George Jones (presente nelle prime sei tracce), che donano alle composizioni un’atmosfera latinegginate. Le tracce con la formazione in cui è presente Budway al pianoforte appaiono più complesse e sfumate. La title track è eseguita con due formazioni diverse e la seconda, con tromba e sax soprano, sembra più ricca e convincente della prima, dove accanto alla ritmica vi è solo la chitarra di Jimmy Ponder.

Il brano finale, in duo, permette a Barbato di mettersi meglio in luce, in un contesto melodico che si adatta forse meglio al suo modo di suonare la fisarmonica.
