John Vanore & Abstract Truth: Contagious Words

Impegnativa la scelta di John Vanore di chiamare il suo ensemble Abstract Truth. Il pensiero non può non andare a The Blues and the Abstract Truth, il capolavoro di Oliver Nelson e allora... beh, è meglio lasciar perdere. Nelle intenzioni di Vanore Contagious Words doveva essere una sorta di album fotografico nel quale raccogliere le storie e le esperienze che ne hanno costellato la carriera.

In effetti, il CD presenta diversi tipi di atmosfera, spazia tra diverse situazioni musicali ma... manca di spina dorsale, la musica si sviluppa solo per linee orizzontali, non c'è verticalità e quindi profondità. L'attenzione alle sonorità e agli impasti timbrici cercata dal leader risulta sfocata perché il contrasto tra le sezioni è appiattito su di un'eleganza formale e di maniera.

Così Contagious Words suona uguale, mancano passione e sentimento, gli assoli sono di contorno e aggiungono ben poco allo sviluppo delle esecuzioni, è un po' come ballare allo stesso modo il valzer e il tango. Le cose migliori arrivano con l'ultimo brano che si distacca dalla omogeneità dei precedenti, abbandonando il jazz patinato per indirizzarsi su una fusion orchestrale decisa, vigorosa e sanguigna con pulsazione funky e varietà ritmica degne di nota.

Troppo... poco e troppo tardi Mr. Vanore.
