Leo Ciesa bazzica da anni gli ambienti off di mezzo mondo - prima di stabilirsi nel 1986 a New York ha vissuto in California, poi in Svezia e suonato nelle località più improbabili - facendo della sperimentazione, della ricerca e dell'anticonformismo la propria ragione artistica. Così lo si è visto frequentare per lungo tempo l'ensemble di avant-rock Doctor Nerve e fondare nel 1987, con la sassofonista Julie Joslyn, il notevole duo hardcore-jazz Iconoclast.

Proprio dal repertorio di quella formazione provengono diverse delle ventidue tracce che compongono Coat of Arms - Music for Solo Drum Set. E la cosa non può stupire più di tanto visto che il CD è stato registrato, in meno di ventiquattro ore, al termine della session dell'eccellente Dirty Jazz. Stupisce invece la maestria di Ciesa nel far cantare tamburi e metalli di un set percussivo assolutamente tradizionale, senza l'uso di sovraincisioni e senza il supporto dell'elettronica.

Ne risultano cinquanta minuti di musica ritmicamente variegata, dalla notevole ricchezza di accenti, di sfumature timbriche, di intuizioni fulminanti. Ma sopratutto emerge una insospettata vena melodica che funge da fil rouge dell'intera registrazione, rendendo accessibile e gradevole la proposta di un batterista allergico alle convenzioni.
