Jim Witzel Quartet: Breaking Through Gently
Offering a refined exploration of jazz guitar, Jim Witzel's release Breaking Through Gently balances accessibility with a modern, lyrical edge. Accompanied by a seasoned trio of pianist Phil Aaron, bassist Dan Feiszli and drummer Jason Lewis, Witzel presents a collection consisting primarily of his original works, along with some by Aaron and a reimagining of a Paul Simon tune. The result is a captivating yet understated journey into contemporary jazz.

The session opens with a Witzel composition, "My Compass." In this upbeat number, Witzel's approach is clear-toned and filled with melodic sensibility. Aaron delivers a crisp solo, and the rhythmic duo of Feiszli and Lewis provide intricate textures that are entirely in keeping with the theme. As the tune implies, the Aaron number "Firefly Waltz" is a waltz done in a swinging medium-tempo. Witzel flits unruly over the fretboard as Aaron shows an unerring touch and melodic instincts. Feiszli's solo is brief but self-assured.

One standout feature of this release is the dynamic between Witzel and Aaron. They each add a richness and harmonic sensitivity to their interaction that feels natural and effortless, continuing with the composition "Celebration," a bright, breezy tune. This Aaron composition has an expansive, upbeat structure, with Witzel's single-line approach developing his ideas. Aaron explores the structure, always keeping the melody in mind. The rhythm section propels the number filled with ardent swing. "Hello, My Friend" is a medium-tempo offering that opens with a reflective piano intro from Aaron. Witzel then joins the narrative with grace and melodic insight. In addition to providing a responsive foundation, Feiszli's solo bass lines are understated yet keep the groove grounded.

"Old Friends" is a composition by Paul Simon, which was recorded by the duo Simon & Garfunkel on the 1968 Columbia Records release Bookends. Witzel's interpretation respects the original's sentiment, although the tempo has slowed from the original. The delicate phrasing and harmonic treatment showcase Witzel's ability to bridge familiar melodies with a jazz flavour. The closing and title track is "Breaking Through Gently." This contemplative composition blends melodic immediacy and contemporary jazz complexity, with Witzel's voice evolving thoughtfully and engagingly as a guitarist.
