Marc Copland & Randy Brecker: Both/And
La complicità con Marc Copland, musicista che suonava il sax alto nel gruppo di Chico Hamilton, prima di diventare uno dei pianisti più apprezzati degli ultimi vent’anni, emerge prepotente lungo tutte le tracce di questo Both/And. Non mancano brani come “Through the Window“ o “Round the Horn“ nei quali Brecker sfodera la proverbiale velocità e precisione di esecuzione, ma a prevalere sono gli episodi a tempo lento e medio-lento dove emergono una pulizia di suono ed una raffinatezza timbrica davvero invidiabili.
Ed è su questo terreno che Copland rivela tutta la sua grandezza perché il suo pianismo è armonicamente ricco e fantasioso, alimenta un dialogo fecondo, permea di un astratto romanticismo il climax complessivo e sa sfoderare la giusta dose di grinta nella bellissima versione di “The Sidewinder“. Senza dimenticare le sue doti di sopraffino compositore, cinque degli otto brani portano la sua firma, con “Both/And“ sopra tutti, con quel suo incedere asimmetrico, lo zigzagare a vista di piano e tromba e il ritmo sospeso, a galleggiare nell’aria.
Howard al contrabbasso e Victor Lewis alla batteria fungono da ciliegina sulla torta per una registrazione dal respiro classico e di adamantina bellezza.
