Talibam!: Boogie in the Breeze Blocks
Loro sono i Talibam!, da Brooklyn, New York: Matthew Mottel alle tastiere-sintetizzatore, Kevin Shea alla batteria. In ambito "indie" hanno già fatto parecchio rumore (i palati dell'intellighenzia radical chic sono andati in sollucchero per questi figli un po' "ruffiani" della Grande Mela), al pubblico più "jazzofilo," invece, il nome potrebbe non dire molto, anche se l'ex Storm & Stress Kevin Shea di recente si è beccato una doppia razione di elogi con i Mostly Other People Do the Killing (quartetto terror-bop incensato per gli elettrizzanti Shamokin!!! e This Is our Moosic).
Che musica fanno i talebani? Beh, non è facile spiegarlo. C'è un po' di John Zorn, quello di Spillane e The Big Gundown, e c'è un po' di Frank Zappa. Ci si sente Sun Ra, eccome, ma c'è anche dell'abbondante funky, qualche spruzzo di disco anni Ottanta, c'è la caustica ironia che fu di band come i Flying Luttenbachers e c'è la furia anarchica del punk. Il tutto riletto con vera attitudine free, nel senso più intransigente e autentico del termine.
Boogie in the Breeze Blocks è una sorta di viaggio nella New York contemporanea, la babele globale; un racconto sonoro costruito con un certosino lavoro in studio, registrando, sovraincidendo, inserendo spezzoni live e field recordings. Il risultato è schizofrenico, difficile da maneggiare, ma allo stesso tempo implacabile. Si passa senza soluzione di continuità dal boogie infernale di "Slap Yr Boots On! Oysters Await" al grind-metal di "Entertaining the After Beast," dalla follia funky di "Jim O'Rourke" al reggae-punk di "Schroeder Meets Jagger" (brano che deraglia continuamente, in un'incessante fuga da binari prevedibili). Insomma, tre quarti d'ora sulle montagne russe, senza fiato e senza posa, scandagliando l'immaginario (post)post-moderno, prendendo a schiaffi consuetudini e aspettative di questo e quel pubblico.
Al naturale i Talibam! sarebbero un duo, ma alla riuscita di Boogie in the Breeze Blocks hanno collaborato una dozzina di musicisti appartenenti alla ribollente scena di Brooklyn: il trombettista Peter Evans, il sassofonista Jon Irabagon e il contrabbassista Moppa Elliott (i restanti tre quarti dei Mostly Other People Do the Killing), il bassista Tim Dahl e la cantante Danielle Kuhlmann, il trombonista Sam Kulik e il chitarrista Chris Forsyth (da tenere d'occhio). Che poi ci sia il marchio ESP a certificare l'operazione è cosa che fa riflettere.
