Figlio di Spanish Harem, allievo di Mongo Santamaria e Tito Puente, Willie Bobo è stato tra i percussionisti più coinvolgenti della sua generazione, impegnato in decine di sedute di registrazione a fianco di musicisti quali Cal Tjader, Herbie Hancock, Cannonball Adderley o Wes Montgomery, oltre che come leader per la Verve in una serie di dischi di chiara impostazione pop, nei quali i successi più alla moda venivano riletti in uno scoppiettante soul-jazz.

Registrato nel 1967 con una piccola orchestra che le note di copertine non si pregiano di specificare e gli arrangiamenti di Bert Keyes o Sonny Henry, Bobo Motion è un ottimo esempio di questo approccio, spinto qui alle sue più raffinate possibilità, andando cioè a lavorare di fantasia nell’aspetto ritmico e nella scelta delle composizioni.

Convivono così in questo breve programma dei classici come "Tuxedo Junction" o "Cute", accanto a "La Bamba" e "Up, up & Away", ma anche il Joe Tex di "Show Me" o il Sonny Burke di "Black Coffee", il tutto attraversato da un funk elettrizzante e leggero che le congas di Bobo alimentano incessantemente. Musica per sorridere.
