Hiromi's Sonicbloom: Beyond Standard
Con l’aiuto dell’eccellente chitarrista David Fiuczynski e dei bravissimi Tony Grey e Martin Valihora, rispettivamente al basso e alla batteria, Hiromi si dedica a smontare con grazia, non disgiunta da ferocia, una mezza dozzina di brani molto noti in vari campi. Si va dal jazz alla musica classica, senza tralasciare il rock. La partenza è sorprendente, con una introduzione allo standard “Softly as in a Morning Sunrise” presa in stile old fashion, compresi i finti rumori solitamente associati al vecchio vinile. Ma dopo poco esplode una versione modernissima del brano, con i quattro musicisti impegnati a catturare la nostra attenzione con una esecuzione di altissimo livello, sposata ad idee convincenti in grado di reinventare un tracciato che sembrava ormai unto e bisunto.
Lo stesso accade con i brani successivi e la tensione rimane sempre alta, anche quando si affrontano un paio di composizioni originali, scritte dalla pianista. In particolare ci pare molto intrigante la versione di “Caravan”, con la chitarra elettrica fretless di Fiuczynski abilissima a districarsi negli esotismi del tema di Duke Ellington e perfetta nella esuberante uscita in assolo.
La chiusura è un gioco pirotecnico affidato al pianoforte di Hiromi, bravissima a scardinare un evergreen come “I Got Rhythm” alla ricerca della perfezione e della ricetta per la felicità.
