Terrence McManus - Gerry Hemingway: Below the Surface of
Newyorkese di Brooklyn (finalmente un autoctono!), chitarrista e costruttore di chitarre, è dal 2007 che il nostro si esibisce regolarmente con il mai meno che immenso Gerry Hemingway. Fu il contrabbassista Kermit Driscoll a farli incontrare. Da allora i due non si sono più persi di vista; l'affiatamento della coppia è cresciuto, ed è cresciuta anche la fiducia che Hemingway nutre nei confronti del giovane collega. Lo dimostrano le decine di live accumulati e il recente ingresso del chitarrista nel nuovo quintetto allestito del batterista di New Haven, completato da Ellery Eskelin, Oscar Noriega e Kermit Driscoll (l'esordio della band è già stato registrato, uscirà a settembre su Clean Feed e si intitolerà Riptide).
Feeling e fiducia, si diceva. Tutto quel che serve per far funzionare un duo. E qui il duo funziona alla grande. Il dialogo è all'insegna della discrezione anche nei passaggi in cui il volume sale, con vuoti e pieni che si alternano delicatamente; un dialogo astratto eppure innervato da un non so che di gustosamente materico, camaleontico grazie ai mutevoli suoni delle chitarre di McManus (che imbraccia anche un particolare strumento stereo con corde di nylon) e al drumming asciutto e musicale di Hemingway.
Fin dall'iniziale "The Night Ocean" tira aria di disco riuscito. Con la consueta, autorevole, classe, Hemingway srotola un battito implacabile infarcito di micro-variazioni e adagiato delicatamente sui feedback sussurranti della chitarra. Solo verso i due minuti e mezzo McManus abbozza un fraseggio, per poi lanciarsi, verso i tre, in un assolo espressionista e introspettivo. Lo schema "ritmo+chitarra che entra in punta di piedi" si ripete in "The Constants," con le spazzole che prendono il posto delle bacchette e le sei corde che si fanno più pungenti e rumorose. Si procede così tra bozzetti acustici ("The Glass Take," tutta giocata sullo scrosciare dei piatti), improvvise impennate (la graffiante "The Rush to Get There" e la concitata "The Disturbance") e divagazioni simil-rumoristiche ("The Dirty Land," con la chitarra stoppata che si traveste da mbira evocando alieni dalla parlata africana).
