Kyle Bruckmann's Wrack: …Awaits Silent Tristero’s Empire

Quarantatre anni, un po' chicagoano e un po' californiano, Kyle Bruckmann conferma in questo suo nuovo lavoro quanto sia per lui irrinunciabile tenere il piede in più scarpe. A suo tempo intruppato come fisarmonicista e tastierista in una "sgangherata rock band" (la definizione non è nostra) come i Lozenge, Bruckmann se n'è poi venuto fuori -fra le altre cose -con questo lussureggiante combo allargato, Wrack, in cui i vari input che convivono nella sua vulcanica inventiva trovano un'ideale valvola di sfogo.

Un'ouverture e tre movimenti pieni compongono quella che il sottotitolo definisce "una fantasmagoria musicale inspirata alle novelle di Thomas Pynchon," esordendo su un clima cameristico ma molto mosso, con qualcosa del linguaggio braxtoniano. Il primo e più ampio movimento (23') batte bandiera più jazzistica, estroversa e diretta, a tratti persino gioiosa (e/o giocosa). Estrema solidità e begli assoli, in particolare un grande trio centrale oboe/viola/batteria. Veramente un gran bel pezzo, ricco e articolato, ottimamente strutturato (a monte) e altrettanto felicemente servito in sede improvvisativa.

Un sontuoso monologo di contrabbasso (con successivo ingresso della viola) inaugura il secondo movimento, poi sottoposto a uno sfolgorante sviluppo corale, sia che si conservino temperature più cameristiche, sia che il tutto esploda ritmicamente, con venature volta a volta country-esotiche, rock-bandistiche, free-indiavolate, ecc. Onnivoro e splendido.

Chiude il terzo e ultimo movimento, che dà qua e là l'impressione di volersi porre come una sorta di ricapitolazione del tutto, anche su un piano squisitamente storico, con aperture trad, corporeità da big band, schegge free e memento finale (non senza qualche impalpabile lungaggine).

Gran disco e gran bella scoperta.
