A band which names itself after an Art Blakey album wears its heart on its sleeve, or rather its jewel case. The instrumental lineup here is exactly the same as the Jazz Messengers edition that included Wayne Shorter and Curtis Fuller, and the programme is made up of originals plus lines from the likes of Shorter and Joe Henderson.

Jujitsu Music. The band name comes from an Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers recording (Original Jazz Classics 90). I got that from the liner notes after I had listened to the disc. I originally noted that Ugetsu’s lineup was identical to that the 60s Messengers with a tenor-trumpet-trombone front.
