Patitucci, Colaiuta, Cunliffe: Trio

Read "Trio" reviewed by Jim Worsley

Pianist Bill Cunliffe was asked if he would be interested in doing a trio record with rhythm section legends {John Patitucci and Vinnie Colaiuta. Naturally he said yes, both immediately and excitedly. “Right now" was the answer when he asked when. Patitucci and Colaiuta were already set-up in a studio at Le Coq Records, and Cunliffe was already there on other business. This impromptu session was void of any rehearsal or sheet music. They played all standards, all from memory. ...

Edward Simon: 25 Years

Read "25 Years" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

John Beasley: MONK'estra Plays John Beasley

Read "MONK'estra Plays John Beasley" reviewed by Jim Worsley

In 2016 John Beasley gifted us with John Beasley Presents Monk'estra Volume 1 (Mack Avenue). The buzz of that superb record led to John Beasley Presents Monk'estra Volume 2 (Mack Avenue, 2017). Both records were Grammy nominated for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. They were both more than Grammy worthy, but alas the competition is fierce. Beasley has been more than a Thelonious Monk fan throughout his life, including his now over forty years in the music industry. ...

Oz Noy: Snapdragon

Read "Snapdragon" reviewed by Mike Jacobs

It's an old sentiment but it still holds that great instrumental chops, enthralling as they may be, are fairly meaningless on their own. And quite frankly, they are pretty ubiquitous these days with the internet exposure machine going full tilt. Given all that, it's quite easy for the listener to become inured with technical prowess-- especially wizardry of the fretboard. So to say Oz Noy is a fantastic guitarist just isn't enough anymore. It's fortunate then that what ...

Edward Simon: 25 Years

Read "25 Years" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Pianist Edward Simon immigrated to the United States from his native Venezuela while still in his teens. He stayed, and carved out a successful career in music. His fiftieth birthday rolled around, and the artist decided it was time to take a look and listen back. In a musical journey that spans the titular 25 Years, Simon has crafted a lot of music, employing a Latin/jazz/classical approach with a seemingly effortless refinement, making sounds that are unfailingly engaging and beautiful. ...
