Jim Black Trio: Reckon

Read "Reckon" reviewed by John Sharpe

The piano trio field is a big one, even that corner reserved for the evenly poised triumvirate heirs to Bill Evans. But drummer Jim Black's unit carves out its own distinctive acre. On the fourth album since its inception in 2011 the threesome, completed by NYC-based, Austrian-born pianist Elias Stemeseder and bassist Thomas Morgan, has reached the stage where they have total trust in one another. On a program of 11 concise self-contained cuts spread across 47-minutes, they create an ...

Jim Black, Danilo Gallo, Alabaster DePlume, Jeremy Cunningham & Other New Releases

Read "Jim Black, Danilo Gallo, Alabaster DePlume, Jeremy Cunningham & Other New Releases" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

In the second part of this week's exploration of new and upcoming release [for the first part click here] we focus, in particular, on the work of drummer Jim Black with his new trio and as a member of the outstanding band Dark Dry Tears led by Italian bassist Danilo Gallo, and on another batch of genre-defying releases by International Anthem, featuring Jeff Parker, Resavoir's drummer Jeremy Cunningham and the first European player signed by the Chicago label, British saxophonist ...

Jim Black's Malamute Live at BIMHUIS Amsterdam

Read "Jim Black's Malamute Live at BIMHUIS Amsterdam" reviewed by BIMHUIS

Restless, agile, but with a steady course: this is how one could describe the malamute, the Alaskan sledge dog, and this description is also appropriate for the eponymous New York band lead by drummer Jim Black and featuring Oskar Gudjónsson on tenor saxophone, Elias Stemeseder on keyboards and Chris Tordini on bass. The four musicians cannot be pinned down to one genre. Together they create a unique style with seemingly incompatible elements: warm-blooded tenor sax, jumpy keyboards and propulsive bass ...

Jim Black, Óskar Gudjónsson, Elias Stemeseder, Chris Tordini: Malamute

Read "Malamute" reviewed by Vic Albani

Jim Black: Malamute

Read "Malamute" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Shortly after breaking into the progressive jazz scene in the 1990s via his work with saxophonist Tim Berne's Bloodcount, trumpeter Dave Douglas's ensembles, Pachora and other fruitful ventures, drummer Jim Black's signature stylistic approach to the kit ignited much interest. Simply stated, he does wonders with a basic 5-piece drum-set amid his quirky off-beats and uncanny sense of time while often staying on top of a given pulse and then some, also evident while leading his AlasNoAxis band.

Jim Black Trio: The Constant

Read "The Constant" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Read "Jim Black Trio al Teatro Franco Parenti" reviewed by Paolo Peviani
