Oliver Schwerdt: Fucking Ballads

Read "Fucking Ballads" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Pianist Oliver Schwerdt's Fucking Ballads is not just an album title; it is a declaration of sonic defiance, a rallying cry for those who dare to challenge the status quo. The juxtaposition of the genteel term “ballads" with the bold expletive “fucking" sets the stage for a musical escapade that is as cheeky as it is profound. From the opening notes of the album, Schwerdt and his ensemble are on a mission to disrupt the conventions of jazz. ...

Euphorium_freakestra: Free Acoustic Supergroup

Read "Free Acoustic Supergroup" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Thanks to pianist and director Oliver Schwerdt, the Euphorium_freakestra is and always has been a glorious experiment in organized disorganization. The double CD Free Acoustic Supergroup is the ensemble's seventh release. Schwerdt's experiments began with the single disc Ðal Ngai (Euphorium Records, 2004) and eventually the group's 3-CD Grande Casino (Euphorium Records, 2018). Ðal Ngai included the guest artists Friedrich Schenker and Günter Baby Sommer. Other releases found the ensemble hosting musicians such as Thomas Lehn, Barry Guy, and Bertrand ...

Günter "Baby" Sommer, Fabrizio Puglisi: Elements

Read "Elements" reviewed by Neri Pollastri

Günter Baby Sommer & the Lucaciu 3: Karawane

Read "Karawane" reviewed by Troy Dostert

Long recognized as one of the most important exponents of European free jazz, drummer Günter Baby Sommer has refused to rest on his laurels, as he continues to do his part to maintain the legacy of free improvisation and creative jazz in a host of contexts, defying the aging process rather insouciantly while doing so. His historical credentials are unimpeachable, having worked with everyone from Peter Brötzmann to Cecil Taylor to Wadada Leo Smith, but his recent output has remained ...

Gunter Baby Sommer, Tyshawn Sorey Trio, Kobe Van Cauwenberghe & Linda Sikhakhane

Read "Gunter Baby Sommer, Tyshawn Sorey Trio, Kobe Van Cauwenberghe & Linda Sikhakhane" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

This edition of OMJ is all over the place when it comes to new recordings—drummers Gunter Baby Sommer (with Lucaciu 3), Pierre Favre (with Samuel Blaser) and Tyshawn Sorey; saxophonists Linda Sikhakhane from South Africa and Germany's Charlotte Greve (with the Lisbeth Quartet), pianist Russ Lossing, Austria's AHL-6, and Belgian guitarist Kobe Van Cauwenberghe and his Ghost Trance band tackling Anthony Braxton's Ghost Trance Music. There rest of the playlist is filled rather well, too. Enjoy! Playlist Linda ...
