Evidence lives up to its title very well. A lot of music in this fairly short album that makes itself heard with surprising simplicity. EVIDENCE is a quartet: reeds, trombone, cello and drums. An unusual formation, but one that recalls Henry Threadgill's Zooid from 2015 onwards (without the guitar): In For A Penny, In For A Pound (Pi Recordings, 2015) and Poof. Evidence: The Message

Here is a well deserving jazz combo that could use some publicity beyond their Grand Rapids, Michigan base. Headed by multi-reed player Michael S. Doyle, this sextet offers a group of durable bebop compositions, all originals, which could stand up with the best of them.

It would be pointless to indicate the specific quality of the music since Doyle and trumpeter/flugelhornist Chris Lawrence spin some tuneful melody lines and solos without taking a great deal of your time. ...

Evidence: Soulville and Untitled

Sometimes moving straight-ahead is the best direction.

The Michigan based group Evidence has the heart of a true working jazz band. Led by saxophonist Michael Doyle the group has been a busy for over ten years at local gigs, festivals, as well as regular performances on WGVU Radio Jazz Night. While clearly in the vein of mainstream post bop jazz, what is clearly obvious from these releases is that this group is capable of delivering solid music.
