Charles Lloyd: Passin' Thru
by Mark Sullivan
Passin' Thru is a live recording celebrating the 10th anniversary of saxophonist Charles Lloyd's New Quartet with pianist Jason Moran, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland. The full band was last heard from on record on Athens Concert (ECM, 2011). When Lloyd reconvened the quartet for a tour in the summer of 2016 he was in a bit of a retrospective mood, curious to revisit some of his earlier music from a more mature perspective. After a ...

Billed as a ten-year celebration of Lloyd's New Quartet featuring Eric Harland, Reuben Rogers and Jason Moran, this 2016 live set actually marked the quartet's first extended tour in over three years and its first release since the extraordinary Athens Concert (ECM, 2011) -an indication of the difficulties of keeping together a working group of contemporary stars. Inevitably perhaps, this set draws heavily from Lloyd's lovingly dog-eared songbook, yet an exercise in nostalgia, this is not. The ...

The latter formation's baptism came with the acclaimed I Long to See You (Blue Note, 2016), and the good news ...

When Lloyd made the jump to Blue Note Records in 2015, his opening salvo came in the form of a six-part suite that brought him into contact with a new crew that blended Greek mysticism and jazz currents in equal parts; then, when ...

Abbiamo appena terminato d'apprezzare la collaborazione con Bill Frisell, Greg Leisz e altri nel progetto The Marvels (I Long to See You Blue Note 2016) che la storica etichetta annuncia la pubblicazione di Passin' Thru, terzo disco del suo New Quartet con Jason Moran al pianoforte, Reuben Rogers al contrabbasso ed Eric Harland alla batteria. Il disco giunge nel decimo ...

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose (The more things change, the more they stay the same) --Jean-Baptiste Alphonse KarrMore than half a century has come and gone since Bob Dylan penned Masters of War," yet the song's message remains as relevant as ever. On January 20, 2017--the very day that Donald Trump took the Oath of Office and became the 45th President of the United States of America--saxophonist Charles Lloyd joined a rapidly growing chorus of ...
