Bobby Avey: Authority Melts From Me

Read "Authority Melts From Me" reviewed by Dave Wayne

It's no mean feat for a creative artist to translate historical events--much less those marred by centuries of slavery, political struggles, foreign occupation (most notably by the US) and the endless oppression of a chronically poor underclass wracked by disease--into a cogent, coherent musical statement. Recent events on the island nation of Haiti have included a devastating earthquake and an ensuing cholera epidemic. Yet the nation and its people persevere. How does all of this translate into music?

Bobby Avey: Authority Melts from Me

Read "Authority Melts from Me" reviewed by Maurizio Zerbo

Bobby Avey: Authority Melts From Me

Read "Authority Melts From Me" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Former Thelonious Monk competition winner, pianist Bobby Avey has been creating a buzz in the jazz community based on the strengths of his three previous solo outings. Yet Authority Melts From Me is his first quintet led outing, inspired by his respect for the people of Haiti and the slave revolt, leading to the country's independence from France in 1804. Here, Avey aligns with a mega-talented supporting cast who respectively add their distinctive voices to his intricately designed oeuvres via ...

Bobby Avey: A New Face

Read "A New Face" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff

Bobby Avey: A New Face

Read "A New Face" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

A New Face is a somewhat misleading title for this album. True, this is the debut recording as leader by the 25-year-old Bobby Avey but he's been on the jazz scene for some time. Most notably, he joined star saxophonist Dave Liebman on Vienna Dialogues (ZOHO, 2006) while he was still a student and his regular trio--bassist Thomson Kneeland and drummer Jordan Pearlson, both featured effectively here--has been together since 2005. Avey composed all eight tunes on ...

Bobby Avey: A New Face

Read "A New Face" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

The CD is called A New Face, referring to the set's leader, pianist Bobby Avey. He was an even “newer" face on 2006's Vienna Dialogues (Zoho Music), a duet set with veteran saxophonist David Liebman that explored the music of pre-twentieth century classical composers, including Mendelssohn, Schumann, Mahler and Brahms. For this, Avey's debut as a leader, the pianist has put together modern-thinking jazz trio, in the mode of Jason Moran or Vijay Iyer. Liebman's back, sitting in on ...
